Compact, biological wastewater treatment

ALMA BIO Compact MBBR

In the treatment stages of the ALMA BIO Compact MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor), the organic load of the wastewater is effectively reduced by biodegradation. A denitrification and phosphate precipitation stage can be installed as an option. Integration in the ALMA module means that the process can be expanded cost-effectively.

Compact MBBR Reactor for Stable Biological Wastewater Treatment

The ALMA BIO Compact MBBR uses freely moving carrier media, on the surface of which biologically active biomass colonizes. The carriers move continuously within the aerated reactor, thereby enabling high biological activity in a compact design. The process is particularly suitable for wastewater with high organic load and fluctuating inflow conditions.

Inlet

Wastewater containing organic matter

The wastewater is fed into the biological MBBR reactor as evenly as possible.

Biofilm Processes

Degradation on mobile growth substrates

Microorganisms grow as a biofilm on the substrate materials and break down biologically available organic compounds.

Procedure

Biologically treated wastewater

The treated water is sent to a solids separation process or a further treatment stage.

Advantages of the MBBR Process

  • High biomass concentration The large surface area available for colonization on the growth media enables high biological activity on a relatively small plant footprint.
  • Stable under fluctuating loads The firmly adherent biofilm remains in the reactor and supports robust operation under varying wastewater loads.
  • Compact Container Design The reactor, aeration system, control system, and necessary auxiliary equipment can be pre-assembled in the ALMA module.
  • Modular and expandable Depending on the treatment objective, the system can be expanded to include denitrification, phosphate precipitation, or additional treatment stages.

When is the ALMA BIO Compact MBBR a good choice?

  • Small to medium wastewater flows For compact industrial applications with a hydraulic flow rate of up to approximately 100 m³ per day.
  • Fluctuating Organic Loads Particularly suitable for production facilities with varying wastewater volumes and COD loads.
  • Limited Floor Space The container solution is suitable for locations where it is not possible to construct a large facility building.
  • Expansion of Existing Facilities The MBBR can be used as an additional biological stage or to increase existing treatment capacity .
