Oxygen scavengers (also known as oxygen scavengers ) are chemical substances that chemically bind and remove dissolved oxygen in water-bearing systems. They are used to protect metallic system components from oxygen corrosion that occur in cooling circuits, boiler systems and other industrial water treatment systems. Oxygen that comes into contact with metal surfaces leads to electrochemical reactions that can cause material damage and significantly shorten the service life of the system.

Technical principles of oxygen corrosion

Oxygen corrosion is an electrochemical reaction in which oxygen is oxidized with the metal. This often produces iron oxide (rust). The process is particularly critical in systems in which metallic components are constantly in contact with oxygen and water.

The resulting rust weakens the mechanical stability and impairs the functionality of the systems.

Mechanism of action of oxygen binding agents

Oxygen binders neutralize dissolved oxygen through chemical reactions before it can cause corrosion. Different types of oxygen bin ders are used depending on the area of application and chemical requirements:

  1. Inorganic oxygen binders

    • Sodium sulphite (Na₂SO₃)
Reacts directly with oxygen to form sodium sulphate. Particularly suitable for boiler systems with medium to high temperatures.
  2. Organic oxygen binders

    • DEHA (diethylhydroxylamine) or hydrazine
bind oxygen and provide additional protection by forming a protective layer of magnetite (Fe₃O₄). These substances are particularly efficient in high-pressure boilers with high temperatures.
  3. Ascorbic acid and derivatives

    • Biodegradable alternatives that effectively bind oxygen and are suitable for environmentally friendly applications.

Areas of application

  1. Cooling water treatment
In closed cooling circuits, the use of oxygen binding agents prevents corrosion in pipes and heat exchangers, thereby maintaining energy efficiency.

  2. Boiler water treatment
In steam boilers, especially in high-pressure systems, oxygen binders minimize the formation of oxygen corrosion on the boiler walls and in the pipes.

  3. Process water
In industrial processes where oxygen corrosion poses a risk, such as in the chemical industry or paper production.

Advantages of the application

  • Extending the service life of system components by preventing pitting and stress cracks.
  • Increased efficiency, as corrosion-related deposits in heat exchangers and boilers are prevented.
  • Cost savings due to lower maintenance costs and longer maintenance cycles.
