On March 10 and 11, 2025, ALMAWATECH will take part in the DWA water management course "Wawikurs Behandlung von Industrie- und Gewerbeabwasser" in Kassel. This event brings together experts from water management, industry and research to discuss the latest developments in industrial wastewater treatment.
Our expert Dr. Alessandro Meda, developer of the ALMA BHU BAF and ALMA BioFil Compactbiofiltration systems, will be giving a technical presentation together with Laura Loreth:
"Use of aerobic biofilm processes in industry - performance limits and examples"
Biofiltration is a proven method for reducing organic loads and improves the performance of downstream reverse osmosis systems for water recycling in particular.

Biofiltration as a sustainable technology for water recycling
Biofiltration is an efficient and sustainable method for the biological treatment of industrial wastewater. It is based on aerobic biofilm technologies in which microorganisms are used specifically to remove organic residues.
Advantages of biofiltration for water recycling applications (WaterReUse):
- Prevention of biofouling in membrane systems
Organic residues can cause deposits in membrane systems, which leads to higher operating costs and shorter service lives. Biofiltration significantly reduces this load. - Effective secondary treatment of industrial wastewater streams
Biofiltration enables a reduction in COD, TOC, nitrogen and BOD₅ values before the water is reused or discharged, particularly in sectors such as the paper industry, food processing or the chemical industry. - Reduction in the use of chemicals
The biological purification of organic substances reduces the need for precipitation or oxidation chemicals. - Flexibility with fluctuating wastewater loads
Biofiltration systems adapt to changing production conditions and offer stable purification performance.
A particular focus is on nutrient control within biofiltration to ensure optimum microbial activity and high purification efficiency.

Main topics of the DWA event
In addition to the presentation by ALMAWATECH, the DWA course offers a wide range of technical contributions and discussions on all aspects of industrial wastewater treatment:
- Strategies and processes for sustainable wastewater treatment for industrial and commercial enterprises
- Legal framework and overview of modern process technologies
- Process examples and current topics such as re-use, water reuse and legionella prevention
- Presentations, specialist exchange and discussion with leading experts from the industry
The event is aimed at engineers, plant operators, environmental technicians and decision-makers from industry who are involved in the optimization of wastewater treatment plants and industrial wastewater treatment plants.

Conclusion: Biofiltration as a sustainable solution for industrial wastewater treatment
Biofiltration offers an economical and environmentally friendly solution for the reduction of organic residues in industrial wastewater. Through targeted nutrient control and aerobic biofilm processes, it contributes significantly to the optimization of water recycling processes and prevents biofouling in downstream membrane processes.
ALMAWATECH is looking forward to discussing these and other topics with the participants in Kassel on March 10 and 11, 2025 and to presenting practical solutions for industrial wastewater treatment.
Many thanks to the DWA for the invitation and the opportunity to speak at the event.
