ALMA FIL AK

The ALMA FIL AK, an activated carbon filter, is used in a wide range of applications from drinking water treatment to waste water and process water treatment, for example for boiler feed water. This filter technology is characterized by the effective and reliable removal of substances that are difficult to biodegrade, such as trace substances, AOX, hydrocarbons and heavy metals.

The activated carbon is selected on a customer-specific basis, taking into account the respective requirements, based on our many years of experience.

Activated carbon filtration for the removal of dissolved organic trace substances

The ALMA FIL AK removes dissolved and biologically difficult-to-degrade substances through adsorption onto specially selected activated carbon. Depending on the water composition, the system can be used, among other things, to reduce trace substances, AOX, hydrocarbons, and other residual organic contaminants. The activated carbon is selected on a project-specific basis based on the target substances and the desired effluent quality.

Reduce Particles and Solids

Proper prefiltration removes suspended solids and flocs. This ensures that the activated carbon surface remains as available as possible for the adsorption of dissolved substances.

Adsorption

Binding Target Substances to Activated Carbon

The water flows through the activated carbon bed. Suitable organic molecules adsorb onto the large internal surface area of the activated carbon and are removed from the water stream .

Operation

Monitor the load and change the coal

As the operating time increases, the activated carbon becomes loaded. Flow analyses or specified replacement intervals are used to determine when replacement or regeneration is required.

Typical Applications of the ALMA FIL AK

  • Removal of Trace Substances from Wastewater Post-treatment of biologically or chemically-physically treated wastewater to reduce selected micropollutants and residual organic loads.
  • Reduction of AOX and Hydrocarbons Adsorptive treatment of suitable organohalogen compounds, as well as mineral oil- and hydrocarbon-containing residues.
  • Landfill Leachate Polishing stage following upstream biological, chemico-physical, or membrane-based treatment.
  • Drinking Water and Process Water Treatment Removal of undesirable organic substances, odor- and taste-causing substances, and selected trace contaminants.
  • Water Reuse and Membrane Protection Reduction of organic residues prior to ion exchange or membrane processes and prior to operational water reuse.

What determines the interpretation?

  • Type and Concentration of Target Substances Different molecules have a different affinity for activated carbon. Therefore, the adsorbability must be evaluated on a project-by-project basis.
  • Organic Background Contamination Contaminants can occupy adsorption sites and thereby reduce the usable capacity for the actual target substances.
  • Contact Time and Flow Rate The filter volume and hydraulic load are designed to ensure sufficient contact time between the water and the activated carbon.
  • Activated Carbon Type and Pore Structure The raw material, manufacturing process, particle size, and possible doping are tailored to the specific application.
  • Replacement and Monitoring Plan Operational safety depends on a regular inspection of the process and a timely replacement of the loaded coal.

Bituminous coal

A commonly used raw material with a balanced pore structure for numerous industrial water and wastewater applications.

Coconut shell

Activated carbon with a high proportion of fine pores, which, depending on the target substance, may be suitable for smaller organic molecules.

Wood and Special Charcoal

Activated carbons with a customized pore structure or surface modification for project-specific adsorption applications.

Typical integration into a wastewater treatment or water reuse facility

1. Pretreatment Biological treatment, precipitation, flocculation, sedimentation, or conventional filtration.
2. ALMA FIL AK Adsorption of dissolved organic matter, AOX, hydrocarbons, and selected trace substances.
3. Optional Post-Treatment Ion exchange, membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, or hygienic safeguards.
4. Discharge or Reuse Discharge of the treated water or further treatment for process and service water applications.
