Selective ion exchanger system and demineralized water cartridges
Ion exchange systems and ion exchange resins

ALMA ION

Our ALMA ION product range includes individually designed ion exchange systems in pressure-resistant containers as well as regenerable DI cartridges – including regeneration service by ALMAWATECH.

The systems are specifically designed for the selective removal of cations and anions – for example, for the targeted removal of heavy metals (e.g., nickel, lead, copper) from industrial wastewater. Another key application area is use in recirculation systems in which process or rinse water is continuously treated and recirculated.

Another application is the use as a polishing stage for the production of demineralized water or ultrapure water – ideal for applications with very high water quality requirements, such as boiler feed water, in solar cell production, the chip industry or medical technology.

Selective Ion Exchange for Heavy Metal Removal and Ultra-Pure Water

The ALMA ION selectively removes dissolved cations or anions from water and wastewater. Depending on the application, selective ion-exchange resins, cation and anion exchangers, or mixed-bed resins are used. This makes the system suitable both for heavy metal removal and recycling, as well as for use as a polishing stage for deionized and ultrapure water.

Water Inlet

Dissolved ions in water

Pre-treated wastewater, process water, or RO permeate flows through the pressure vessel filled with ion-exchange resin .

Ion exchange

Selectively bind target ions

Functional groups on the resin bind unwanted cations or anions and, in return, release other ions into the water in a controlled manner.

Regeneration

Restore Storage Capacity

Once the loading limit has been reached, the resin is treated with suitable regenerants, or the DI cartridge is replaced through the regeneration service.

Typical Applications of the ALMA ION

  • Selective Heavy Metal Removal Removal of dissolved metal ions such as nickel, copper, or lead from suitable industrial wastewater streams.
  • Polishing after Precipitation and Filtration Separation of remaining dissolved metal ions, which were not completely removed by chemical precipitation.
  • Process and Rinse Water Circuits Continuous treatment of contaminated partial streams for recirculation into industrial processes.
  • Production of Deionized and Ultrapure Water Reduction of residual ions following a reverse osmosis process or as a standalone polishing stage.
  • Boiler feedwater and process water Achieving low and stable conductivity for quality-critical applications.

What determines the interpretation?

  • Type and Concentration of Ions The selection of the resin depends on the target ions, co-ions, concentrations, and the desired process quality.
  • Selectivity of the Ion Exchange Resin Different resins have different affinities for heavy metals, hardness-causing substances, acid residues, and other ions.
  • Water Pretreatment Particles, oils, organic contaminants, and oxidizing agents should be sufficiently reduced before ion exchange.
  • Loading and Breakthrough The system is designed so that ion breakthrough is detected in a timely manner and the required water quality is reliably maintained.
  • Regeneration and Wastewater Management Plan Regenerant, rinse water, and the resulting concentrate are already taken into account during system design.

Selective ion exchanger

For the selective removal of specific heavy metals or other defined ions from industrial water and wastewater streams.

Mixed-Bed Polisher

Combination of cation and anion exchange resins for further desalination and the production of water with very low conductivity.

Reusable DI Cartridge

Compact solution for smaller quantities and decentralized applications—including replacement and regeneration services.

Typical integration into an industrial processing plant

1. Pretreatment Precipitation, filtration, activated carbon, or reverse osmosis reduce unwanted solids and impurities.
2. ALMA ION Selective removal of dissolved target ions or polishing for further desalination.
3. Quality Control Monitoring of conductivity, target ions, or breakthrough to ensure safe process control.
4. Use or Reclamation Used as process water, rinse water, boiler feed water, deionized water, or ultrapure water.
