Task
ALMAWATECH implemented and successfully commissioned an innovative wastewater treatment plant for a traditional cold rolling mill in the Ruhr region . The aim was to comply with the strict requirements of Annex 40 of the German Wastewater Ordinance (AbwV) - particularly with regard to dissolved nickel and copper compounds - and at the same time to ensure reliable, fully automatic operation.
ALMAWATECH was commissioned to build a wastewater treatment plant to treat the rinsing and cleaning wastewater from the cold rolling mills and electroplating plants.

Solution & implementation
The main objective of wastewater treatment is to reduce nickel and copper compounds and neutralize the wastewater. The basic steps of the treatment process are explained below:
- Lamella separator / lamella clarifier:
A lamella clarifier was installed for the pre-separation of undissolved solids. Here it is possible to use flocculants in doses in order to achieve an improved cleaning performance if required.
- Gravel filtration ALMA FIL:
After the lamella clarifier, the last particulate matter is removed by gravel filtration. This filtration serves as pre-treatment for the ion exchangers.
To remove dissolved metals, the pre-treated wastewater is passed through two ion exchangers. The ion exchangers are regenerated automatically when a set conductivity is exceeded.
- Neutralization ALMA Neutra:
Before the treated wastewater enters the sewer, it is neutralized in a two-stage treatment reactor by adding neutralizing agents. The dosing of acid or alkali is pH-controlled.
