ALMAWATECH implemented and successfully commissioned an efficient wastewater treatment plant for a traditional cold rolling mill in the Ruhr region . The aim was to comply with the strict requirements of Annex 40 of the German Wastewater Ordinance (AbwV) - particularly with regard to dissolved nickel and copper compounds - and at the same time to ensure reliable, fully automatic operation.
The system was designed for a throughput of up to 20 m³/h and combines several established physical-chemical processes into a robust overall concept.

Wastewater treatment process steps
1. lamella clarifier for solids separation
The first treatment step is a compact lamella clarifier, which is used to separate suspended solids. To optimize the precipitation performance, flocculants can be added if required. The lamella design ensures high hydraulic efficiency on a small footprint.
2. gravel filtration ALMA FIL
The pre-treated water is then passed through the gravel filtration system ALMA FIL gravel filtration system. This removes fine particulate residues and at the same time protects the downstream ion exchange technology. The filters are made of GRP, equipped with a nozzle base and backwashable - ideal for continuous industrial applications.

3. heavy metal removal with ALMA ION ion exchangers
A key objective was the reduction of dissolved heavy metals such as nickel and copper. For this purpose, two ion exchange columns are used in pendulum operation. Regeneration takes place automatically when a defined conductivity is exceeded - a reliable and economical method for metal removal even with fluctuating loads.
4. pH neutralization with ALMA Neutra
In the final step, the treated wastewater is neutralized before being discharged. The two-stage ALMA Neutra neutralization unit doses acid or alkali in a pH-controlled manner. This ensures that the water meets the requirements for discharge into the public sewer system.

This system is a compact, reliable and fully automatic solution for the treatment of industrial process wastewater that meets the highest environmental standards. The modular design also allows flexible adaptation to future expansions or changed requirements in the production process.
