UV Oxidation for the Removal of Persistent Trace Substances
The ALMA OXI UV system combines a suitable oxidizing agent with intense UV irradiation. This interaction produces highly reactive radicals that can oxidize persistent and biologically difficult-to-degrade organic compounds. The system is suitable for advanced wastewater treatment, for the treatment of process water, and as a polishing stage within industrial water reuse concepts.
Dosing Oxidizing Agents
Depending on the water composition, target substances, and purification goal, hydrogen peroxide, for example, or ozone, or another suitable oxidizing agent, is dosed in a controlled manner.
Forming Radicals Through UV Radiation
The UV energy activates or breaks down the oxidizing agent. This produces highly reactive species that specifically attack organic molecular structures.
Oxidize target substances
Compounds that are difficult to degrade are reduced, broken down, or converted into more readily biodegradable intermediate products.
Typical Applications of the ALMA OXI UV
- Pharmaceutical Trace Substances Treatment of selected drug residues, active ingredients, and other organic compounds that are difficult to degrade biologically.
- Hospital and Laboratory Wastewater Advanced treatment of wastewater containing complex or only partially biologically degradable residues.
- Chemical, Paint, and Coatings Industry Oxidation of suitable dyes, organic complexing agents, and production-specific organic contaminants.
- Textile and Surface Treatment Reduction of color and selected persistent organic processing aids.
- Process Water and Water Reuse Polishing of water streams contaminated with organic matter prior to reuse within the facility or downstream ultrapure water treatment.
What determines the interpretation?
- Type and concentration of target substances Different compounds react differently to UV radiation and the oxidizing agents used.
- UV Transmission of Water Turbidity, color, and absorbent impurities affect how deep UV radiation can penetrate into the water.
- Oxidizing Agents and Dosage The type and amount of the oxidizing agent are adjusted based on water quality, pollutant load, and the desired removal efficiency.
- UV Radiation Source and Reaction Time Lamp type, radiation intensity, reactor geometry, and hydraulic residence time determine the available UV dose.
- Preliminary testing with actual water Laboratory or pilot tests provide reliable data on dosage, energy requirements, reaction time, and achievable effluent quality.
