Task
The ADLER-Werk Lackfabrik Johann Berghofer GmbH & Co KG is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of paints, varnishes, and wood preservatives. For decades, this family-owned company has stood for the highest quality, sustainability, and innovation. ALMAWATECH was commissioned to implement a challenging wastewater treatment project for the production facility in Schwaz, Austria.
The goal was to treat wastewater from paint production. This wastewater is contaminated with heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and AOX and requires high-performance, reliable treatment using our ALMA CHEM MCW CP system.

Solution & implementation
Our CP plant is based on the process of precipitation, neutralization, and flocculation, supplemented by a special sulfide treatment to ensure the removal of heavy metals.
The wastewater treatment system was implemented as a batch plant based on the chemical-physical wastewater treatment process. The core processes are precipitation and flocculation, followed by sedimentation in the reactors and post-treatment using ALMA FIL double-layer filters (Ø 1.2 m) with an integrated CEB backwash station.

The sludge line uses a sludge thickener, followed by a chamber filter press (1,000 × 1,000 mm). This features a patented system that prevents dewatered sludge from adhering to the filter cloths, as well as a fully automatic discharge system for the filter cake. This ensures reliable and efficient sludge treatment.

Process additives used
The ALMA AQUA wastewater product series is used, which has been specifically developed for the respective applications and industries. These products can also be custom-formulated as needed to ensure maximum efficiency and operational reliability of the system.
ALMA Additive OS – a specialized sulfide precipitant for heavy metals
ALMA FHM A10 – polymeric flocculant for particle agglomeration
ALMA LIME – Lime-based neutralizer
ALMA FLOC FE40 – Iron-based primary flocculant

Temporary solution with a rental system
To ensure a smooth transition during the renovation of the existing wastewater treatment system, a rental system (CP system) was initially installed as a temporary solution. Following a successful trial run, the old system was dismantled, and the new CP system was then installed.
