Task

Expansion of a municipal wastewater treatment plant to include a 2-stage, biologically activated filtration plant (BAF) with flushing equipment and optimization of the existing pre-treatment stage and sludge treatment. The modular biofiltration plant comprises the stages of chemical phosphorus precipitation, upstream denitrification and nitrification (each with integrated residual phosphorus elimination).

Design data

Preparation quantity:

  • Daily wastewater volume: 18,000 m³/d
  • Population equivalent: 60,000 PE

Target parameters:

  • Treated wastewater in accordance with EU water legislation requirements for discharge

Solution & implementation

Our main focus in this task was on reducing pollutant loads, particularly with regard to chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), filterable substances as well as nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. We successfully mastered this challenge by optimizing the mechanical pre-treatment and using a modular biofiltration system.

Our two-stage biologically activated filtration unit(ALMA BHU BAF) includes a preparatory step for phosphorus removal using iron(III) chloride and flocculants(wastewater chemistry from ALMAWATECH).

Through the integrated denitrification and nitrification processes, we effectively reduce COD, nitrogen compounds and the remaining phosphorus compounds. Biofiltration is carried out in an upflow process and uses inorganic filter materials for optimum results.
