Task
The GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel is one of the leading institutions in global marine research. It researches the diverse processes of the ocean from the deep sea to the atmosphere, focusing on physical, chemical, biological and geological aspects.
The research areas of GEOMAR include:
- Ocean circulation and climate dynamics,
- Marine Biogeochemistry,
- Marine ecology,
- Dynamics of the ocean floor.
In 2022, ALMAWATECH was awarded the contract to build a seawater treatment plant as part of the new extension to the Seawater Center. We are proud to be able to contribute to GEOMAR's important research with our water treatment plant.
Design data
Preparation quantity:
- 4 x 40m3/h
- Salt content between 15 and 35 %
Solution & implementation
The water to be treated varies between seawater and artificially produced seawater, depending on the object of research. The system is characterized by its extensive sensor equipment, including a large number of pH probes, conductivity meters, redox measurements, oxygen monitoring, temperature control with heat exchangers and flow measurements. Another feature is the use of plastic or titanium for all wetted components.
The water treatment plant consists of four treatment lines and treats the seawater using the following basic process steps:
- Skimmer with ozone treatment:
A skimmer with adjustable air feed, ozone dosing and automatic backwash system removes particles, organic substances and microorganisms from the water.
- Sand filtration ALMA FIL:
Sand filters, which are automatically backwashed, are installed to safely remove all suspended particles.
- UV treatment:
As a final measure, a high-performance UV system is installed to prevent the growth of microorganisms and algae.
Further features of the system are:
The four processing lines can be run in a circle if required.
A preparation station was provided for the production of artificial seawater.
Heat exchangers have been installed to enable precise temperature control.
