Task
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is an important research center of the Federal Republic of Germany. In the impressive surroundings of the German Antarctic Receiving Station (GARS O'Higgins), DLR and the EOC/IBS (Earth Observation Center / International Ground Segment) are doing pioneering work in the processing of satellite data and the precision measurement of tectonic plate displacement.
Our mission: ultrapure water for Antarctic research
We were given the responsible task of designing and building an advanced reverse osmosis plant to provide high purity ultrapure water for research activities in this unique environment. This plant will be supplied with seawater via a powerful pumping station to ensure that the challenging requirements of Antarctic research are met.
Design data
Preparation quantity:
- 350 liters/d permeate
Target parameters:
- Reduction of the salt content from 36,000 mg/l to 125 mg/l
Solution & implementation
The production of ultrapure water is a demanding process in which precision and efficiency are of crucial importance. Our ALMA OSMO VE system plays a decisive role here. It undergoes a specialized process to produce a truly pure end product from seawater.
1. softening the seawater: In the first step, the seawater is softened using ion exchange resins, which remove dissolved iron, calcium, magnesium and sodium cations. This step protects the membranes of our reverse osmosis system from deposits (scaling) and ensures smooth operation.
2. reverse osmosis treatment: The softened water is fed into our advanced reverse osmosis system. Here, dissolved ions and residual compounds are removed from the water to achieve exceptional purity.
3. UV treatment for microbiological safety: The final step involves UV treatment of the water. Exposure to UV light effectively eliminates bacteria and other microorganisms, meeting the highest standards of purity and safety.
We have also installed a pumping station for seawater extraction and a dosing station for antiscalant to ensure efficient operation of the membrane systems.
Our ALMA OSMO VE technology guarantees that you have a reliable and efficient method of producing high-purity water that meets even the strictest standards. If you would like more information about our ultrapure water solutions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
