Task

ALMAWATECH designed and installed a CP batch treatment system with a capacity of 90 m³/day for a recycling facility. The system is already designed to accommodate a future expansion to up to 120 m³/day and enables the flexible and safe treatment of complex industrial wastewater.

Recycling facilities generate, among other things, contents from oil separators as well as other liquid hazardous wastes that contain high concentrations of pollutants. This wastewater is characterized in particular by the following components:

  • high concentrations of heavy metals

  • AOX

  • Hydrocarbons

  • Solids

The goal of the project was to develop and implement a robust and flexible treatment plant capable of safely treating these wastewater streams and subsequently preparing them for discharge.

System Design

To address this challenge, an ALMA CHEM MCW batch-type CP system was installed. The system is constructed entirely of polyethylene (PE) and is specifically designed for the treatment of special wastewater at waste management and recycling facilities.

The facility features:

  • two batch reactors

  • a large batch tank with a mixer for feeding the reactors

  • flexible parallel operation of both batch reactors

This allows the system to respond very flexibly to different wastewater compositions and ensure stable process control.

Solution & implementation

Our CP plant is based on the process of precipitation, neutralization, and flocculation, supplemented by a special sulfide treatment to ensure the removal of heavy metals.

The ALMA CHEM MCW (CP system) enables reliable treatment of heavily contaminated wastewater, particularly wastewater containing heavy metals such as copper, zinc, nickel, lead, chromium, and arsenic, as well as hydrocarbons and AOX.

Chemical Treatment and Process Control

Chemical treatment is carried out using dosing systems for process additives from the ALMA AQUA product line. In addition to neutralizing and precipitating agents, the process also includes the precipitation of sulfide-containing heavy metals, which is performed using our organosulfide ALMA Additive OS.

In addition, the plant is equipped with a neutralization system in which spent lyes and spent acids can be added in batches and balanced.

Solid-liquid separation and sludge treatment

After chemical treatment, the wastewater is withdrawn from the batch reactors via a patented floating clear-phase separator and then passed through gravel filters with automatic backwashing.

The resulting sludge is removed from the reactor and fed into a sludge thickener. From there, it undergoes further treatment and disposal via a chamber filter press.

The filtered clear water is then collected in a storage tank, undergoes a final inspection, and can then be automatically discharged into the sewer system.

Successful implementation for complex industrial wastewater

This system has provided a flexible and robust solution for treating complex industrial wastewater from recycling processes. The batch process ensures reliable treatment even when wastewater quality fluctuates significantly.

The ALMA CHEM MCW CP batch systems have proven themselves to be a reliable technology for treating complex industrial wastewater containing heavy metals, particularly at waste management facilities and recycling companies.

Process additives used

The ALMA AQUA wastewater product series is used, which has been specifically developed for the respective applications and industries. These products can also be custom-formulated as needed to ensure maximum efficiency and operational reliability of the system.

  • ALMA Additive OS – a specialized sulfide precipitant for heavy metals

  • ALMA FHM A10 – polymeric flocculant for particle agglomeration

  • ALMA LIME – Lime-based neutralizer

  • ALMA FLOC FE40 – Iron-based primary flocculant
